HUSTON TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY — DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police reported a fatal two-car accident that occurred at 11:26 a.m. on Wednesday on Route 255 (Hoovertown Road) in Huston Township, Clearfield County.
Police said that the crash occurred as a 2004 Freightliner Tri-Axle operated by Larry W. Kunes, 65, of Weedville, was traveling northbound on State Route 255. A 1998 Toyota Camry operated by Arnold W. Burkett, 73, Penfield, had been travelling westbound on Mt. Pleasant Road and had stopped at its intersection with State Route 255.
Burkett then pulled out from Mt. Pleasant Road onto State Route 255 to travel southbound, police said, traveling into the path of Kunes’ Freightliner. Burkett’s Camry was struck on the driver’s side door by Kunes’ truck, and the truck pushed Burkett’s car northbound on State Route 255, across the southbound lane, where it struck the guard rails.
The car continued to slide northbound and crossed back into the northbound lane, coming to rest facing northeast.
After the collision, the truck traveled across the southbound lane before going through the guard rail off the east side of the roadway. The truck then rolled onto its side.
Burkett was pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant Deputy Coroner Kimberly Snyder. Kunes suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Penn Highlands DuBois via Bennetts Valley EMS.
Police were also assisted on scene by Penfield Volunteer Fire Department.
