PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” The Punxsutawney Area High School chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 18 new members â€” four seniors and 11 juniors â€” during a ceremony held Thursday at the high school.
The new members bring the total number of students in the PAHS chapter to 34.
Kaitlyn Cressley, NHS historian, gave a brief explanation of the groupâ€™s history and foundation. The other four officers â€” Cassandra Cook, president, Tori Brooks, vice-president; Kelsey Young, secretary, Sarajane Depp-Hutchinson, treasurer, and top NHS scholar, Sierra Milton â€” explained the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, leadership, service and character.
From there, new members lit candles during the lighting and recognition ceremony.
The new members then recited the NHS Oath.
After that, Alex Voris performed â€śThis is the Moment.â€ť
Principal David London then made closing remarks and congratulated the new members on their induction.
In order to be inducted into the National Honor Society, a student must maintain a high academic standard with an average of 95 or above.
