PUNXSUTAWNEY — Because National Hospital Week is a celebration of people, Punxsutawney Area Hospital is honoring its employees by recognizing the role each of them plays in extending a sense of trust to their patients and members of their community.

“A hospital is more than a place where people go to heal, it is a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope,” hospital CEO Dan Blough said. “From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and vibrant community.”

Thursday, the hospital celebrated its employees with two Service Award ceremonies in the West Wing conference room.

The first ceremony honored those employees with five and 10 years of service; the second honored those with 15 to 45 years.

A total of 70 employees were honored from more than 25 departments hospital wide.

Two employees were presented with their 45-year service award pins.
National Hospital Week dates back to 1921, when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community-wide celebration would alleviate public fears about hospitals.

The celebration, launched in Chicago, succeeded in promoting trust and goodwill among members of the public and eventually spread to facilities across the country.
