1971: Christmas Eve fire guts five businesses

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite the fact that there's no carnival this week, the town of Punxsutawney is still celebrating the Firefighters’ Old Home Week.

The Punxsutawney Spirit will pay tribute to the town’s firefighters who have risked their lives to protect the lives and property of others over the years.

We always hear that volunteer firefighters are on duty 24/7, which includes holidays, but nobody would expect such a thing to happen on what is probably the biggest holiday of the year for so many.

For a full story on the fire and a schedule of Old Home Week events, see Wednesday's print edition of The Spirit.
