Nobody left out in pair of junior high wins
PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a pair of full-team efforts, the Lady Chucks middle school basketball teams each defeated the Lady Raiders of Brookville Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy's eighth-graders trailed 4-2 after the first quarter, but outscored Brookville 11-3 in the second and never looked back, going on to win 30-19.
While everyone didn't score for the eighth-grade squad, every team member played a contributing role, Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said.
"Brookville has a nice team, and it was good to win against them," he said. "All seven girls hustled and did the little things it takes to win. All of the girls should be proud of themselves."
Punxsy's leading scorers were Emma White and Hope Bridge with 12 apiece. Morgan Doverspike added six points to wrap up the Lady Chucks' scoring.
Carlson also noted the fundamental play of MiKeelee Brink and Claire Smith in the win.
"MiKeelee and Claire are always hustling and working defensively, which sparks us at both ends," he said.
Punxsy improved to 10-5 on the season with the win.
In the seventh-grade contest, five different Lady Chucks scored en route to a 28-11 win over Brookville.
"The girls showed the true meaning of playing as both an entire team and as a unit during this game," Punxsy head coach Darrin Kriebel said. "It was gratifying, as their coach, to watch each girl always searching for her open teammate for a shot. Each player made the most of her time and opportunities on the floor during this game."
Punxsy was consistent on both ends of the court, holding Brookville to fewer than four points in each quarter and scoring eight points in three-of-four quarters.
Devon Dubensky and Alli Lunger led the scoring for Punxsy with ten points each.
Morgan VanLeer chipped in with four points, and Alli Ishman and Kimberlee Shoemaker each added two.
Next up on the Lady Chucks' schedule is a trip to Bradford Friday to take on the Lady Owls.
