PUNXSUTAWNEY — A Martha Street house was heavily damaged by fire that began around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

All three Punxsutawney fire companies battled the large fire at the residence of Carol States, 207 Martha St., Punxsy.

Department Chief Paul Hense said that when he arrived on-scene, there was heavy smoke and fire coming out from the rear of the older frame house.

“It had a lot of the older type of construction including double planked siding which made it difficult to extinguish,” he said.

The fire was contained to the rear of the house, with the rest of the home sustaining heavy smoke and water damage.

The Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal investigated the cause and determined it to be accidental, possibly electrical, and beginning in the vicinity of the back porch.

“The fire did work its way up to the attic, and we had to utilize Tower 40 to ventilate the roof,” Hense said.

The house was insured, and States planned to stay with relatives for the time being.

There were no injuries, but three of States’ four cats died, Hense said.

The Salvation Army supplied refreshments for the firefighters, and Jefferson County American Red Cross assisted States in finding temporary lodging with relatives.

Punxsutawney firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company and Jefferson County EMS. The McCalmont Township Volunteer Fire Company was on stand-by at Central.

There was no damage estimate.
