Ninth-grade Chucks win 10th game of season
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A dominant second half helped the Punxsy ninth-grade boys' basketball team win for the 10th time this season Monday, 55-24, over Clearfield.
The Chucks (10-3) were ahead 19-12 at halftime before blowing out the Bisons with a 36-12 second half, starting with a 20-point third quarter.
"Overall, it was a good game," Punxsy coach Brandon Krug said. "We really broke it open in the third and never looked back."
Brandon Mancuso matched Clearfield's score with 24 points.
Kevin Hughes added eight points.
Punxsy hopes to make up for one of its three losses when it hosts Elk County Catholic at 4:15 p.m. Friday. The Crusaders beat the Chucks by eight points Jan. 11 in St. Marys.
"We have a few days to prepare, and I'm sure the guys will be ready to go come Friday," Krug said.
Eighth-grade Chucks 32, Clearfield 28
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A 14-8 third quarter helped the Punxsy eighth-grade boys' basketball team dispatch a 13-11 halftime deficit and knock off Clearfield Monday, 32-28.
The Chucks (6-7) received a big game from Ryan Sloniger, who scored 16 points. He had nine points in the second half and nailed 6-of-6 free throws.
Andrew Fedigan added six points, and Adam Ferko had four points.
Punxsy coach Glenn Good said that defense helped the Chucks win Monday.
The Chucks face Elk County Catholic Friday after the seventh-graders' 4 p.m. game.
Seventh-grade Chucks 39, Clearfield 28
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The seventh-grade Chucks controlled each of the first three quarters while downing Clearfield Monday, 39-28.
Punxsy (9-4) was ahead 33-7 entering the fourth quarter, as it allowed fewer than four points during each of the first three quarters.
"I was pleased with everyone's contributions," Punxsy coach Darren Sherry said. "I'm continuing to see everyone gel as a team, and we're correcting the fundamentals and creating more depth."
John Matthews led with 12 points, Brandon Douthit followed with eight, and Braxton Giavedoni scored five points.
"The kids are constantly improving and working hard," Sherry said. "I'm very pleased with each game and each practice. I've watched them polish their abilities and become even better individuals and team players."
Ninth-grade Chucks 44, DuBois 30
DUBOIS — A 12-3 first quarter and a 16-7 third quarter were the difference during a 44-30 victory over DuBois for the Chucks last Friday.
Punxsy led 24-15 entering the break before pulling away even more thanks to a 16-7 third quarter.
Brandon Mancuso scored a team-best 12 points, Cory Geer scored seven points, and both Clayton Dale and Matt Burkett added six points.
DuBois 40, eighth-grade Chucks 24
DUBOIS — Poor defense and too many turnovers dropped Punxsy toward a 40-24 loss last Friday at DuBois.
The Chucks were behind early and often due to 14-6 and 12-6 initial quarters in the Beavers' favor. Punxsy fell behind 35-18 entering the final quarter.
Punxsy's highest scorers in the game were Ryan Sloniger (seven points), Dakota Thomas (six) and Adam Ferko (four).
DuBois 25, seventh-grade Chucks 19
DUBOIS — The Chucks struggled to score before falling to DuBois last Friday, 25-19.
Punxsy was ahead 7-5 after the first quarter before the Beavers scored 18 points to Punxsy's 12 during the final three quarters.
Brandon Douthit (seven points), Nathan Ray (five), John Matthews (five) and Braxton Giavedoni (two) scored for Punxsy.
Altoona 39, ninth-grade Chucks 33
ALTOONA — A battle in Altoona went in the home team's favor, as the Chucks fell on the road Jan. 26, 39-33.
Punxsy led 27-22 entering the final quarter, but Altoona finished well, including six-straight free throws to close the game. Tyler Young had a breakout game for Punxsy, scoring 17 points. Brandon Mancuso added six points.
"They really keyed on Brandon," Punxsy coach Brandon Krug said. "Tyler did a very good job of stepping up and making shots."
Ridgway 34, eighth-grade Chucks 27
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Ridgway used a 27-11 second half to defeat the Chucks Jan. 24, 34-7.
Punxsy was ahead 14-7 by halftime before losing the lead during the final two quarters.
Dakota Thomas led with eight points, Ryan Sloniger added five, and both Dakotah Byers and Andrew Fedigan had four.
Bradford 39, eighth-grade Chucks 29
BRADFORD — Punxsy was outscored during every quarter of a 10-point loss to Bradford Jan. 21, 39-29.
The Chucks trailed 19-14 by halftime, and the Owls added to their lead with a 20-15 second half.
Punxsy's highest scorers in the game were Andrew Fedigan and Dakotah Byers, who each tallied 10 points.
