Next stop for the Lady Chucks: District Finals
PUNXSUTAWNEY — By defeating the Lady Owls of Bradford 5-0 Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney, the Lady Chucks' tennis team advanced to the District IX team competition finals next Monday against DuBois.
The format for the first-round playoff between Punxsy and Bradford was different than the regular season format, with each team fielding three singles players and two doubles pairs with no repeats allowed.
In the No. 1 singles, Punxsy's Anna Monyak used good drop shots and consistent volleying to earn Punxsy's first point in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Emily Hardy.
In the No. 2 singles, Shaina Reddinger defeated Amina Sosic 6-3, 6-2 to earn a second point for Punxsy behind long volleys and solid returns.
"Anna and Shaina both placed their shots very well today, and their serves were consistent," Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius said after the match.
In the No. 3 singles, Searra Wasicki defeated Bradford's Sara James 6-0, 6-2 for Punxsy's third point.
"Searra played consistently throughout both sets" en route to her victory, Graffius said.
Three points was all Punxsy needed to advance, but with all five matches taking place at three different courts, the Lady Chucks all did their part to earn the victory.
In the No. 1 doubles, Lauren Wolfe and Amber Ward defeated Colleen Douglas and Alyssa McGrew 6-2, 7-5 in the best-of-three sets format.
"Lauren had some awesome net shots, and Amber played a nice backcourt game," Graffius said.
And in the No. 2 doubles, played at the West End courts, Kylie Krise and Calena Spearing defeated Jordan Taylor and Danbee Kim in another close match, 7-5, 6-2, to complete the sweep for Punxsy.
Even though their next team districts match isn't until next Monday, the Lady Chucks will be far from idle the rest of this week with the doubles portion of districts being played today in DuBois and a match scheduled for Thursday against Brockway.
Monyak and Reddinger will be Punxsy's first pair today, and Wolfe and Wasicki will be the second.
