New, wider Torrence Street now open

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The new two-way traffic Torrence Street opened for business Monday afternoon.

Monday, Borough Manager Ben White said the project was completed by the contractor Palo Construction to enough of a degree to open it for travel. He said there are some parts of the project that can’t be completed at this time before the road widening will be considered finished.

A new traffic signal system for the Pine Street and North Findley Street intersection is on hold due to an unforeseen delay in the arrival of the new signal posts.

White said the posts will not arrive until sometime in August.

Until then, the existing signals will continue to be utilized, and there will be a stop sign placed at Torrence as it enters Findley.

There is right-turn only onto Findley, and there a no-left turn sign has been placed under the stop sign on Torrence.

White said there will have to be some tweaks in the current signage on Torrence Street.

“The road way is open to traffic, and it is nice and wide for two-way traffic,” he said.

Council member Roger Steele said it was brought to his attention that the former parking signs are still up along the Jefferson Street High Rise and must be removed.

There was already a car parked in a former visitors-only space along Torrence, Steele said, adding that borough police had to get the driver to move the vehicle.
