Nancy Jeane Lazorchak, 54, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, surrounded by friends and family.
She was born March 30, 1960, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of Joseph and Lola Jeane (Ritzie) Lazorcak.
She graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School in 1978 and then went on to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated in 1982 with a BA in Special Education.
She worked as a learning support teacher in the Punxsutawney Area School District since 1983.
She taught at West End, Mapleview and the middle school. She retired in 2013 and was known as Miss L. to her students.
The following reflected Nancy’s philosophy of education, “The secret in education lies in respecting the student.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Nancy had been a church musician since the age of 13, playing both the piano and church organ.
She began her church musical career at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.
She then became a member of the Brookville Baptist Church and continued playing for the choir and the church service. Music was a vital part of Nancy’s life.
Nancy has been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for the Punxsutawney Cancer Care Fund.
The Cancer Care Fund was very dear to Nancy’s heart. She liked the fact that the money was kept local. Many cancer patients have been helped through this fund.
Nancy enjoyed riding her bike, taking care of her home, working in her yard and tending to her perennial garden.
She also enjoyed playing the piano, meeting friends for lunch and dinner, spending time at the Outer Banks and being a church musician.
She dearly loved her family, church family, friends and, of course, her two cats!
Nancy faced her cancer with courage and dignity.
She “let her life speak” — hoping to encourage others who were dealing with similar challenges.
Surviving relatives include her mother, Lola Jeane Lazorcak of Punxsutawney; a brother, David Lazorchak and wife Carol of Punxsutawney; two nieces, Jennifer Dee and husband Paul and Alison Bernat and husband Jake; a great-niece, sweet Lydia Dee; and many dear friends and relatives who loved her and supported her throughout this journey.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Lazorcak, and her grandparents, Peter and Elizabeth Lazorcak and Effie and Chester Ritzie.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 28, 2014, at the Brookville Baptist Church, with the Reverend David P. Borger officiating.
Interment will be at Reynoldsville Cemetery.
