Mildred T. (Pennington) Poeta, 87, Punxsutawney, formerly of Rossiter, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center surrounded by family.

She was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of the late Daniel and Nancy (Tozar) Pennington. She grew up in McGees Mills.
Dec. 31, 1943, she married Frank Poeta, who preceded her in death Oct. 12, 1979. The couple owned Poeta Trucking of Rossiter for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Poeta was a homemaker and the last surviving sibling of her two brothers and five sisters.

Surviving relatives include a son, Frank and wife Mary-Ann Poeta of Rossiter; two daughters, Mary Johnston-Ackerson and husband Carl of Punxsutawney and Cindy Novitski and husband Michael of Ruther Glen, Va.; a son-in-law, William Smith of Painesville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Poeta was preceded in death by two daughters, Laura Jane Smith of Painesville, Ohio, and Gloria Ann Bishop of Punxsutawney.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. today, at the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home, Punxsutawney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the funeral home with Mrs. Poeta's niece, the Rev. Gina Hope McElwee, officiating.

Interment will follow at LaJose Cemetery, LaJose.
