Michael Matthew Burba, 92, of Arcadia, Pa., died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital in Punxsutawney.

The son of the late Joseph and Stefkia (Sadowniczak) Burba, he was born on Sept. 29, 1921, in Arcadia, in the same home where he resided all of his life.

Mike was a member of the Church of the Resurrection and attended the Glen Campbell parish site.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from June 28, 1944, until June 1, 1946. His military service during World War II included tours of duty overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater area. On March 13, 1945, Mike was wounded in action during the battle at Iwo Jima, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He earned the rank of being a Private First Class.

Mike was employed for many years as a section boss throughout his career at local coal mines, including employment at the Greenwich Colleries, Trojan Mine, Copper Valley Mine and PA Coal and Coke Moss Creek Mine.

He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Father McNelis Council No. 1481 in Indiana, Pa., and a member of the American Legion Post No. 141 of Indiana, Pa. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Indiana, PA Chapter. Mike derived great joy from the time he spent hunting, fishing and gardening.

Mike married his wife, the late Jeannette B. (Janocha) Burba, on May 14, 1949, and they had shared almost 59 years of marriage together when Jeannette passed away on April 28, 2008.

He is survived by his eight children, Michael J. Burba and wife Jean of Milton, Fla., Walter G. Burba of Glen Campbell, Pa., Michaline Miess and husband Sam of James Creek, Pa., William M. Burba and wife Paula of Cherry Tree, Pa., Francis M. Burba and wife Sandy of Commodore, Pa., Joseph A. Burba and wife Theresa of Glen Campbell, Pa., Taeresa A. Ritzo and husband Albert of Woodbridge, Va., and Christine A. Clevenger and husband William of Blairsville, Pa.

Mike is also survived by his 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Genevieve Burba of Carnegie, Pa., and daughter-in-law Nancy C. (Sabella) Burba of Glen Campbell, Pa.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of birth.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeannette; his son, Robert Burba; his granddaughter, Emily Burba; his grandson, Timothy Burba; his daughter-in-law, Nancy J. Burba; his three brothers, Albert, Adolph and John Burba; and his five sisters, Stella Scott, Hedwig “Hattie” Bacasa, Laura Lonzo, Michalina Burba and Veronica Burba.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, and again from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, Pa.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, at the Church of the Resurrection in Glen Campbell, Pa., with the Rev. E. George Saletrik as the officiant. Military honors will be observed during the interment service at the parish cemetery in Glen Campbell, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, Mike wished for memorial donations in memory of his wife, Jeannette, to be directed to the American Cancer Society, Armstrong/Indiana/Westmoreland Unit, 510 Pellis Rd. Ste 203, Greensburg, PA 15601.
