BROOKVILLE â Six Punxsy athletes are headed to next Friday and Saturday's state championships in Shippensburg after they won at the District IX Class AAA Track and Field Championships Thursday in Brookville.
A.J. Meterko followed through on his multiple No.1 seedings by winning both the 800- and 1,600-meter dashes.
Meterko, a senior, edged DuBois junior J.J. Clinchoc â 2:02.04 to 2:02.84 â in the 800 run and held off St. Marys junior Gideon Woelfel â 4:30.04 to 4:33.64 â in the 1,600 run.
Meterko was also the final leg of the Chucks' winning 4x800-meter relay, which beat DuBois by more than four seconds. Junior Derick Kelly, freshman Kevin Hughes and sophomore Nathan Ward preceded Meterko in the event, which Punxsy finished with a time of 8:12.04 â 16 seconds better than their seasonal best.
Meterko also finished second in the 3,200-meter run.
A pair of Punxsy seniors are headed to states on the girls' side. Nickita Martz earned her fourth and final state championship berth when she won the javelin for the fourth time. On her first throw of the day, she won the event with a mark of 123-5. The closest competitor, Bradford junior Emily Marshall, threw 108-3. Marshall was seeded ahead of Martz entering Thursday.
Martz also finished third in the shot put.
Punxsy's Milea Schall is heading to states for the first time after she easily finished first in the 3,200-meter run. To say she ran away with the event is an understatement, as her time of 11:43.54 was 37 seconds better than the second place-winner, her senior teammate Shannon Byerly.
Also placing for the Lady Chucks were Timi Shoick (tie for second, long jump), Alexis Young (second, 1,600 run and fifth, 800 run), Karah Hollis (tie for second, 100 dash and fifth, high jump), Jacque Barnett (third, javelin), Shannon Carpenter (fourth pole vault), Alexis Minich (fourth, shot put and discus), Santana Smith (fifth, shot put and discus), Kirsten Dean (fifth, triple jump), Juliann Boddorf (fifth, 200 and 400 dashes).
Punxsy's 4x800 team was second, and the 4x100 and 4x400 squads were third.
Punxsy's other boys to place were Hughes (third, 400 dash), Dylan Lettie (third, 110 hurdles and high jump; and fourth, 300 hurdles), Brody Morgan (third, javelin) Tyler Presloid (third, pole vault and fourth, triple jump), Kevin Byars (third, long jump) and Ward (fifth, 1,600 and 3,200 runs).
Byars, last year's triple jump champion, fouled on all three triple jump attempts Thursday.
