MESORACO WATCH

August 6, 2011

Over the past two weeks, former Punxsutawney Area High School catcher and current Major League Baseball top-prospect Devin Mesoraco has been through his share of ups and downs, both on the field and off.

As a top prospect in the Cincinnatti Reds' system, Mesoraco was highly desired at the MLB trade deadline, but the Reds weren't willing to deal him.

Unfortunately for Mesoraco and his fans, they weren't willing to deal any of the catchers at the Major League level to make room for Mesoraco just yet.

That means Mesoraco will spend a bit more time with the AAA-affiliate Louisville Bats.

On the field, Mesoraco has been working hard to improve his skills so that when he gets the much-awaited call to the big leagues, he is ready.

Mesoraco finished July with a hot bat, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a July 25 win over the Charlotte Knights and 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a walk in a July 26 game against the Rochester Red Wings.

Mesoraco slumped a bit over the first few days of August with two 0-for-4 games.

He bounced back in strong fashion Tuesday going 2-for-4 and scoring a run.

Despite Mesoraco's effort, though, the Bats fell to the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-3.

Mesoraco was given the night off Wednesday and went 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch and walked in Louisville's 3-2 win Thursday against the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Yankees.

Mesoraco hit his 11th home run of the season Friday night, a solo shot in the fourth inning, but the Bats came up short, 8-4, against the Yankees.

The next date that Mesoraco fans and followers are waiting for is Sept. 1, when Major League Baseball expands its active rosters to 40 players.

Expanded rosters mean that players who spent most of the season in the minors may be called up for their shot at the big leagues, and many believe that Mesoraco's chance will come that day, if not before.
