Punxsutawney baseball standout and Cincinnati Reds prospect Devin Mesoraco reached base eight times during six games this past week while batting .250 with the Class AAA Louisville Bats.
Mesoraco, who is a 2007 first-round draft pick with the Reds, once again saw his batting average dip below .300 after the week.
Through 25 games this season, the slugger is hitting .293 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. After hitting three home runs and driving in eight during his first eight games, Mesoraco has not hit a home run and has four RBIs in his last 17 games since that hot start.
The catcher had his best performance of the week last Saturday when he was 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. He followed that performance with a 1-for-3 game and a walk Sunday.
Mesoraco hit 1-for-5 with a walk during a doubleheader Tuesday, was 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout Thursday, and was 1-for-4 with a K Friday.
The Bats dropped to 16-12 on the season following Friday's 4-0 loss to Buffalo. Much like Mesoraco, the Bats were off to a blazing start earlier in the year — they were 9-1 at one point — before they cooled off a bit.
Louisville is 0-5 in May and has lost six of its last seven games.
This weekend is the best bet to date for fans to see Mesoraco play, as Buffalo is about a 3 1/2-hour drive. The Bats play at Buffalo at 1:05 p.m. today and Sunday before heading to Rochester, N.Y., for a four-game series that will take place Monday through Thursday.
The Bats will then host Buffalo Friday through next Monday.View more articles in:
