Devin Mesoraco, a 2007 baseball state champion at Punxsutawney Area High School, struggled during the second week of his Class AAA season with the Louisville Bats, managing three hits in 18 at-bats.

The Bats didn't do much better, going 2-4 during that span before witnessing a rainout Friday against the Columbus Clippers.

Mesoraco's average dipped to .256 in this young season after a 3-for-18 (.167) week. He still reached base in four of the five games he played this week.

The slugger had his best day last Saturday, when he was 1-for-3 with a double a run scored and a walk. He scored the team's only run during a 7-1 loss to the Indianapolis Indians, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate.

He singled during each of Sunday and Thursday's games for his other hits this week. Sunday, he also drove in a run during a 6-4 win over the Indians (5-11), and Thursday, he was 1-for-4 during a 19-3 loss to Columbus.

He finished a combined 0-for-6 with two walks and two strikeouts Monday and Tuesday and received the day off Wednesday.

Through 13 games this season, the catcher has three home runs and nine RBIs. He also has four doubles and has scored five times.

Through 18 at-bats against left-handers, he is hitting .333, compared to .200 through 25 at-bats against right-handers.

The Cincinnati Reds' 2007 first-round draft pick is also hitting much better with the bases empty, .346, compared to when there is at least one runner on base, .118.

Columbus, a Cleveland Indians affiliate, took two out of three games from the Bats Tuesday through Thursday to leap into a tie for first place in the International League's West Division with the Bats. Both teams are 10-5.

Mesoraco is top four on the Bats in home runs, RBIs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He is tied for the team lead in both home runs and doubles.

Louisville will travel to Toledo (6-10) for a three-game series that begins today before hosting Durham (9-6) for a four-game series Tuesday through Friday.
