Melvin Q. “Bart” McFarland, 99

Melvin Q. “Bart” McFarland, 99, Sykesville and Laurelbrooke since 1986, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at the DuBois Nursing Home.

He was born May 19, 1912, in Rochester Mills, Indiana County, a son of the late John and Bessie (Gaston) McFarland.

Dec. 11, 1944, he married Margaret “Peg” (Cooper) McFarland, who survives.

 Mr. McFarland was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and he was employed as a punch press operator with H-H Robertson Steel Fabricating Company.

He attended the Lakeside United Methodist Church and was a member of the Brady Grange; the Traveling Groundhogs Camping Club; the Young at Hearts social group at Mt. Zion Church; and he enjoyed trapping and gardening.
Mr. McFarland also resided in New Brighton for many years.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include two children, Harold McFarland of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Luella Krieger and husband Jim of Reynoldsville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Ralph “Butch,” Carl “Jyp,” Louis, George “Joe,” Harry and Don “Peck” McFarland; a sister, Alice Elbel; and two infant sisters, Helen and Hilda.

Friends will be received from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at the Lakeside United Methodist Church, DuBois.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at the Lakeside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Zilhaver officiating.
Interment will take place in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Rochester.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Leo Nedza Funeral Home, Sykesville.
