Melvin Mitchell, 79

Melvin Mitchell, 79, of Brookville, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Mel was born on Oct. 5, 1933, in Punxsutawney, the son of late Mae (Amundson) and Melvin S. Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary (Pattison) Mitchell; his parents; and his brother, Hans Eugene “Fritz” Mitchell.

A 1951 graduate of Punxsutawney High School, Mel began his career as an educator at Reynoldsville High School, Punxsutawney High School and Tyrone High School.

In 1965, he joined Clarion University, eventually rising to the rank of professor of mathematics until his retirement in 1991.

During his academic career, he was recognized for excellence as an educator. For example, he was recognized state-wide as a Distinguished Faculty Member.

His efforts to help teachers to integrate personal computers into the classroom were recognized by the Governor’s Office.

His former students describe him as having high expectations but possessing a passion for helping his students to meet and exceed those expectations.

He also served in numerous local organizations, including the Brookville Presbyterian Church, Brookville Cemetery Board, Eagles No. 983 Brookville, Hobah Lodge No. 276, Altoona Shrine and was a life member of Elks No. 516, VFW, American Legion and the Scottish Rite (Coudersport).

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1955, with both foreign and domestic duty stations.

Later in his work life, he took great pride in participating in educational liaison efforts by the United States Navy.

He is survived by his six children, Melvin Jr. and wife Susan of Louisville, Ky., Mary Ann Himes Fields and husband Larry of Charlottesville, Va., Maggie Montana and husband Stan of Fryburg, Pa., Michele Hetrick of Brookville, Mark and wife Sheila of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Matthew and wife Tammy of Knox, Pa.

Also surviving are grandchildren Emily Himes Stall and husband Tyler; Shane Himes; Jarred Hetrick and wife Kristen; Derek Kerr and fiancée Megan; Melia Hook and husband Don; Gabe Montana and wife Kensey; Tessa Montana; Carly, Christian and Casey Mitchell; and Marcus and Mathew Mitchell; and great-grandchildren Briliegh, Raelynn, Colbea and Kylar Hook; Alden Montana; Alayah Kerr; and Nicholas Mitchell; step-grandchildren Laurel, Linden, Andrew, Hannah, Linden Jr., Kaydance, Shawn, Campbell, Braydon, Jason, Tinleigh and Dustin and companion Nancy Yates.

Additionally, he is survived by three sisters-in-law, Mary Mitchell of Baltimore, Md., Barbara Blose of Punxsutawney and Gretchen Pattison of Punxsutawney.

The family will be receiving guests from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the McKinney Funeral Home, Main Street, Brookville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2013, at the Brookville Presbyterian Church, with interment at the Brookville Cemetery.
