Melvin Dean Steele, 70

Melvin Dean Steele, 70, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1942, in Home, Pa., a son of the late Alvord Boyd and Irene (Johnson) Steele.

On June 20, 1964, he married Marsha Jane Shelley. She survives.

Dean enjoyed working with wood, watching racing and helping his friends.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include four children, Susanne Peterson of Punxsutawney, Chester Steele and wife Kim of Punxsutawney, Evan Steele, and Dustin Steele of New Kensington; five grandchildren, Aiden and Zoe Peterson, Tiffany and Charlie Steele, and Jessica Hartzell; three brothers, Bruce Steele and wife Sara of Dayton, Blaine Steele of Indiana, and Roger Steele and wife Mary of Punxsutawney; and a sister, Myrna Marshall of Smicksburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond “Bud” Steele and Earl Steele; and three sisters, Donna Daugherty, Martha Anderson and Lula Malcolm.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at Brenda D.Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Mahoning Cemetery, Indiana County.
