Maurice E. George, 87

Maurice E. George, 87, Johnstown (formerly of North Freedom), died early Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Maple Winds Care Center in Portage.
He was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, a son of the late William M. and Carrie (Dinger) George.

Jan. 31, 1945, he married Betty M. Brocious, and they recently celebrated their 66th anniversary.

Mr. George was a member of the North Freedom United Methodist Church. He was the secretary and treasurer of the Redbank Township (Armstrong County) supervisors for 35 years and was a scoutmaster.

He worked in the sawmill and the mines in his early days and for Martin’s and Hilliard’s Hardware store in New Bethlehem. He was a member of the Freedom Grange No. 2073, the Hawthorn Lions Club and the NBC Chorus (Barbershoppers).

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a daughter, Darlene Bain and husband Randall of Johnstown; two grandchildren, Tonya Sager and husband Scott, and Ryan Bain and wife Nikki, all of Rockwood; and two great- grandchildren; Gavin Sager and Addison Sager, both of Rockwood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Marion George, Irvin George and two infant brothers.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Alcorn Funeral Home, Hawthorn, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the North Freedom United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the church with Pastor Joan Rousseaux and Pastor Randy Bain co-officiating.

Interment will be in the North Freedom Cemetery, Ringgold Township, Jefferson County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Freedom United Methodist Church, care of Karen Nolf, 5748 Route 28, Mayport, Pa. 16240.
