Marian Lee Powers, 69

September 22, 2011

Marian Lee Powers, 69, of Big Run, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, as a result of a traffic accident.

She was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Mervin Roy and Virginia (Rhodes) Sebring.

Jan. 10, 1959, she married Lonnie Lee Powers, who survives.

She was a member of the Big Run Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and the treasurer.

Mrs. Powers formerly worked for Clearfield Jefferson Mental Health as a residential program worker. She went above and beyond for her individuals by volunteering many hours of her own time to serve the needs of other people. She also worked as a private care nurse, enabling many people to stay in their own home. She was a friend to many people, often quietly giving to others whom she felt might need a hand.

She was a very active member of the Big Run Beta Sorority, which is a community-minded ladies' organization. She would spend many hours collecting prizes and donations that would be used for fund-raising within the organization. She was also a former member of the Big Run Volunteer Fire Company Ladies' Auxilliary.

She loved her husband, Lonnie, her family and grand-kids. She enjoyed watching "The Young and the Restless," playing spider solitaire, reading and crossword puzzles.

In addition to her husband, surviving relatives include two children, Cindy O’Shane and fiancé Denny Covatch of Punxsutawney, and George Powers and wife Peggy of Big Run; three grandchildren, Heather Pasternak, Patrick Powers and Rusty Matthews; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Linda Holmes of South Carolina.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Holli Lynn Matthews; a brother, Bill Sebring; and a sister, Sandy Sebring.

There will be no viewing.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Big Run.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at the Big Run Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dawn Krishart officiating.
Her ashes will be interred at the McClure Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Powers' memory to the Big Run Presbyterian Church.
