Man, 70, dies in fire

MCCALMONT TOWNSHIP — A McCalmont Township man lost his life Sunday in a fire that spread quickly and severely damaged his home at 3498 Graffius Avenue Extension.

Harry L. Hibbard, 70, McCalmont Township, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder.

Snyder said Hibbard died due to smoke inhalation.

According to McCalmont Township Fire Chief Orrie Manners, the home was fully involved when he arrived on scene, and there had been a fatality.
The man was unable to escape the flames, and firefighters were unable to reach him in time.

Manners requested that the Pennsylvania State Police Fire marshal investigate the cause of the deadly blaze.

According to scanner transmissions, as of 10 p.m., Manners and the fire marshal were continuing to investigate the cause.

McCalmont firefighters were assisted by Central, Elk Run, Lindsey, Big Run, Sykesville, Oliver Township and Rossiter fire companies.

A complete list of assisting fire companies was unavailable at Spirit press time.
