M. Clementine Smouse, 80

M. Clementine Smouse, age 80, passed away Tuesday April 29, 2014, at the Buffalo General Hospital Buffalo, N.Y., surrounded by family.

She was born Martha Clementine Stiver on Sept. 8, 1933, in Punxsutawney, one of two daughters born to Edward and Alice (Jordan) Stiver.

Clem married Raymond Smouse on Oct. 18, 1952, at the home of her parents in Cloe, Pa. Raymond survives.

Clementine and Raymond were longstanding members of the Gowanda United Methodist Church, where she served on various boards and committees of the church throughout the years and was the church treasurer at the time of her death, a position she held for a very long time.

Her memberships included the Gowanda Garden Club and Friends of Collins Library.

Clem worked for nearly 25 years at the Gowanda Free Library in Gowanda, N.Y.

Survivors in addition to her husband of 61 years, include two sons, Dennis (Barbara) Smouse of Monroeton, Pa., and Edward (Marjorie) Smouse of Springville; and a daughter, Kathy Smouse of Gowanda; grandchildren Jay, Ryan, Ashley, James and Jamie; great-grandchildren Sara, Keegan, Kollin, Peyton and Aidan; sister Joyce (Jack) Laverty of Longview Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Clementine’s father, Edward, passed away Aug. 16, 1969, and her mother Alice passed away April 14, 2010.

Friends may call at the Schindler Funeral Home, 44 Center Street Gowanda from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Gowanda United Methodist Church, 30 North Chapel St., Gowanda (assemble at church).

Interment will take place in the Pine Hill Cemetery Gowanda, NY.

Memorials may be made to the church.
