Lyle A. "Zoog" Welsh, 79

Lyle A. "Zoog" Welsh, 79, of Big Run, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at DuBois Nursing Home.

He was born near Big Run on Feb. 13, 1934, the son of the late Roy James "Gabe" Welsh and Anna Lee (Davis) Welsh.

On July 3, 1954, he married the former Wilma "Billie Jo" Haag. She survives.

Mr. Welsh served in the United States Army in the Signal Corp as a field radio repairman in New Jersey and Puerto Rica during the Korean Conflict.

He received an honorable discharge in 1956.

He was a retired setup man for Rockwell Manufacturing and Invensys at the DuBois plant.

"Zoog" loved to play baseball and was known in the area as a very good short stop and second baseman.

He also previously enjoyed shooting pool at Maggie’s, hunting and fishing.

He became a member of Saint Phillips United Methodist Church in 1957.

He taught adult Sunday School classes, and with his fine tenor voice, he sang with the church choir.

He could also be found helping with Bible school games and activities, setting up the outdoor Nativity, shoveling snow and helping where ever he could.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Doug Welsh and wife Jane of Guys Mills, Paul Welsh and wife Gina of Big Run, Bruce Welsh and wife Robin of Stump Creek, David Welsh and wife Donna of
Philipsburg and Susan Welsh of Big Run; four grandchildren, Joshua Welsh, Holly Welsh, Monica Welsh and Alex Welsh; one great-grandson, Robert Paul Welsh, Jr.; one brother, Donald E. Welsh and wife Shirley of Reynoldsville; a sister-in-law, Ruby Welsh; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Angela Welsh; a grandson, Bobby Welsh; four brothers, William Welsh and wife Selma, James Welsh, George Welsh and wife Frances and Jack Welsh and wife Dotty; and three sisters, Ruth Phillips and husband Phil, Mary Camuso and husband Frank and Bea Merrill and husband Sidney.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the funeral home, officiated by DRMC Hospice Chaplain, Pastor Kevin Bockas.

Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Big Run.
