PUNXSUTAWNEY — Borough council is planning ahead for community events, from next month's Pizza and Prevention Day to next summer's Groundhog Festival.

At Monday's meeting, council approved a request from the Punxsutawney Fire Department for a street closing and meter bagging for the display of fire apparatus on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The request pertains to the 11th-annual Pizza and Prevention event, which is sponsored by Fox's Pizza Den in Punxsutawney and benefits the fire department.

From approximately 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 6, South Findley Street from Mahoning Street to Union Street will be closed.

In addition, the alley between McDonald's and the former Punxsy Hotel will be unusable during this time for the purpose of setting up a pizza oven trailer and to offer additional parking.

Three parking meters in the Punxsy Hotel municipal lot will be bagged for delivery driver parking. All barricades and meter bagging will be done by the fire department.

Council also approved use of Barclay Square for the purpose of hosting the 47th-Annual Punxsutawney Groundhog Festival.

The events are scheduled to start at noon on Sunday, June 30, 2013, with day and evening entertainment scheduled throughout the week, ending at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.

In other business:
• Mayor James Wehrle urged the public to attend a 9/11 memorial service scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the Punxsutawney Eagles.

• Council approved an application for a spotlight to better showcase the fire department's Phantastic Phil.

• Council tabled a request to vacate the alley between McDonald's and the Punxsy Hotel lot.
