PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Over the weekend, the town of Punxsutawney â€” more specifically the Punxsutawney Area Community Center and SS.C.D. â€” hosted 14 different sixth-grade basketball teams, both boys' and girls' for an annual tournament.
Four different Punxsutaw- ney teams participated, and others traveled from Marion Center, Brookville, Penns Manor and as far away as Butler to participate.
No tournament champion was crowned in either division, but each team was guaranteed three to four games to gain valuable experience.
A synopsis of the Punxsy teams' games follows:
Punxsy's first girls' team, called Punxsy, was undefeated in pool play, going 4-0.
In its first game, Punxsy defeated Indiana 15-12, the closest contest Punxsy would face.
Kate Horner scored five points, followed closely by Kylie Lingenfelter with four, Leah Miller with two, and Kaitlyn Doverspike with two.
Next, Punxsy took on Purchase Line, and after trailing 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, Punxsy held Purchase Line to two points throughout the final three quarters to earn a 25-12 victory.
Lingenfelter led Punxsy's balanced scoring attack with five points, while Elyse White, Horner and Miller added four each. Doverspike, Kally Graham, Mia Lingenfelter and Alyse Whitman each scored two.
Punxsy continued its defensive dominance in its final two games â€” a 16-6 win over Penns Manor and a 23-6 win over Marion Center.
Kylie Lingenfelter led the scoring for Punxsy in the Marion Center game with eight, and Horner's eight points in the Penns Manor game was a team-high.
Punxsy also had another squad that participated in the girls' bracket that went by SS.C.D., which played competitively, although it was unable to pick up any wins.
Its closest games were contests with Indiana (22-15) and Marion Center (15-9).
Cassidy Reed and Kassidy Graham were SS.C.D.'s leading scorers, with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Kylee Shoemaker followed closely with 13, and Emily Greibel (7) and Ally Whit- man rounded out the scoring.
On the boys' side, Punxsy also had two team, the first calling itself the Punxsy Panthers. The Panthers went 1-2 at the tournament, with the win coming in a close contest against Brookville, 26-23.
Matt Blose led Punxsy's scoring in the win with nine points, and Kevin Constant followed with seven.
Tyler Richardson, Zander Neal, Colton Burkett and Matt Wehrle each scored two in the win.
Punxsy's first loss, to Marion Center, was a close defensive game with M.C. coming out on top, 19-13, and a well-polished Butler team defeated Punxsy, 42-23.
Constant led Punxsy's scoring in the loss to Marion Center with six, and Blose led Punxsy with six of his own in the Butler game.
Punxsy's final team, the Punxsy EastSide, also finished without a victory but gained some valuable experience in the tournament.
Their losses came to Indiana, Rising Star, Homer City and Marion Center.
Brandon Matthews was the EastSiders leading scorer with 26 points over the four-game span.
Ethan Blose amassed a total of 11 points, Isaac Stouffer scored four points, and Willie Hoover earned two points.
