Lawrence "Amos" Ray Gaston, 78

Lawrence “Amos” Ray Gaston, 78, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 27, 1936, in Montgomery Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Boyd Ray and Sarah Henrietta (White) Gaston.

Mr. Gaston was a United States Army veteran who dutifully served his country.

On May 16, 1959, he married the former Gladys Evelyn Milliron. She preceded him in death on April 4, 2014.

Amos was a devoted husband and lovingly cared for his wife during her illness, in spite of his own health issues.

Amos was a member of the Eagles, the Walston Club and the St. Joseph’s Club.

His enjoyments were gardening, “mechanical tinkering” and catering to his cat, Toby.

He is survived by four children, Lawrence “Buck” Gaston and wife Robin of Apollo Beach, Florida, Sharon Seger and husband Calvin of Punxsutawney, Sally Shields and husband Clint of Rochester Mills, and Dr. Michelle Gaston of Alexandria, Virginia; six grandchildren, Justin Gaston and wife Colleen, Jodi Leppla and husband A.J., Jennifer Maxim and husband Rick, Chad Seger, Joshua Shields and wife Melissa, and Adam Shields and wife Courtney; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Laura Jane Lowmaster and husband George of Montoursville, Wilda Mae Layman and husband John of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Rachel Ann Hetrick and husband Ronald of Punxsutawney; one brother, David Floyd Gaston of Rossiter; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Kanouff and Boyd Cressley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters, Helen June Kanouff and Beverly Kay Cressley.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2014, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Tom Spiker, chaplain with Punxsutawney Family Hospice.

Interment will follow at Lakelawn Memorial Park, where military honors will be accorded by the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Gaston’s memory to Willow Run Sanctuary or Gateway Humane Society.
