PITTSBURGH — Brookville head coach Mark Powell was happy with the way his team played, even though the Lady Raiders lost 60-39 to Bishop Canevin at North Hills High School in the first round of the PIAA Class AA First Round Friday night.
Brookville (17-8) played in its first state playoff game in nearly a decade and will use the experience as a building block for the program.
"I wasn't sure what to expect," Powell said. "But I think it was a great way for our four seniors to go out. And I think the underclassmen played well, and it should help our program."
The Lady Crusaders (21-5) led for the entire game and dominated the game from the second quarter on. Brookville kept the game close because of the sloppy play and turnovers by both teams.
Bishop Canevin head coach Tim Joyce said play was a little out of control in the first quarter.
"We were defending the way we wanted to and creating turnovers," Joyce said. "We were looking up and making passes like we wanted to. I just think the girls were a little too excited to start the game."
The Lady Raiders were down only 16-10 heading into the second quarter.
"Well, I think the big difference was the turnovers in the first quarter, and we couldn't knock any shots down," Powell said. "When a team like that gets a lead on you, you really have to battle back."
In the second quarter, Bishop Canevin's Erin Waskowiak took over the game and helped facilitate its offense with sharp passing against Brookville's zone defense and her scoring ability. Waskowiak finished with a game-high 21 points.
"We had to play zone to keep the game tighter," Powell said. "Their size made them tougher to defend because they could see over our defenders and were able to pass the ball better."
As the Lady Crusaders started to score more, they also started to shut down the Lady Raiders' offense. Brookville scored only 14 points in the second and third quarter combined, while Bishop Canevin extended its lead to 25 points.
Lanae Newsome (11 points) and Kaitlyn Hill (10) led the Lady Raiders in scoring.View more articles in:
