PUNXSUTAWNEY â€“ Sweeps are getting to be the norm on the volleyball court in Punxsutawney. For the fourth time in six home matches, Punxsy swept its opponent by stinging Marion Center, 3-0, on Monday night.
Punxsy (8-2) has now allowed its home opponents to win just four games in six matches for a 15-4 game win total and victories in five of six.
Senior Shayla Brink and junior Emilee States powered the Lady Chucks frontline. Both lined six kills apiece with Brink adding a pair of aces and digs while States had one dig.
Ashley Reitz provided the night's serving prowess as she served six-straight points to help open the lead in game one and three late points in the second game. Her stat line read four aces, 11 digs, eight assists and a kill.
"Ashley served well for us while both Shayla and Emilee States played well on our front line," said Punxsy coach Heather Good.
Sydney Weaver provided her all-around game with nine kills, nine digs, three aces, two assists and a block assist. Taylor Newcome and Bella Gallina added three kills apiece. Newcome had a team-best three blocks with three digs. Gallina finished with three digs and an assist.
Chelsea Engeholm, Sydney Phillips and Emily Reitz did their parts in the 13-ace Punxsy team effort. Engeholm lined three aces all in the third contest in a span of seven-straight service points and dug two balls.
Phillips and Reitz both had a pair of aces. Reitz recorded 10 digs to Phillips' eight.
Shaina Painter completed the Punxsy stat line with nine assists, five digs, two dink kills and a block assist.
After a Marion Center ace, the visitors pulled to within a point, 10-9, midway through the opener. Following a side out on a Weaver kill, Ashley Reitz stepped to the service line. Reitz stayed there through six-straight points including alternating two aces with two kills by States to open a 17-9 margin.
The Stingers were unable to get any closer than four points, 23-19, the rest of the way. The Lady Chucks wrapped up the 25-20 game on a ball hit long.
Marion Center tried its best to even the games 1-1 in the second contest. Punxsy went out in front by five, 11-6, early on only to see Marion Center erase the lead compliments of four home miscues, 11-11. The contest would see six more ties before the Stingers ran off four-straight points to make it 22-18.
After the visitors hit two balls out of bounds in a row, the Stingers came within two points of the win, 23-20, on a kill hit of the Lady Chucks' blockers.
Punxsy would start its late rally on a kill down the left line by States. Weaver continued the comeback with two-straight kills of her own to tie the game 23-23. Following a point for each side, Marion Center hit the ball out on the right line before Punxsy's Brink killed the game-winner off the block for the 26-24 win.
"In the second game, we got down on ourselves but were able to pull it out," added Good.
In game three tied 8-8, Punxsy put together its run. After Marion Center hit a ball long, Engeholm stepped up and served eight points in a row. In the run, Engeholm started it with an ace and added two more in the streak while States laced two kills along with a combo block by Painter and Weaver for a 17-8 lead.
Punxsy rode the nine-point lead the rest of the game that was finished by two-straight Weaver aces and a 25-13 game score.
"We bounced back and controlled the whole third game and worked out the match," said Good.
Punxsy will have no time to rest, as it travels to Bradford for a 6 p.m. match tonight.View more articles in:
