PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' golf team played host to the four teams in its division Monday at the Punxsutawney Country Club and walked away with a still-undefeated record, scoring the lowest team total (228) and defeating DuBois, Brookville, Ridgway and Brockway.
Because Punxsy was the host, each team scored against Punxsy, so Punxsy's record, 1-0 entering the day, improved to 5-0 after the sweep.
Punxsy was led by Sarah London, who shot a 52 on the nine-hole course.
"It was a great win, and Sarah's score was such an accomplishment, given the conditions," Punxsy head coach Katie Irwin said. "She barely missed an eagle putt on No. 9, but tapped it in for a solid birdie."
Lauren Giavedoni came in just three shots behind London with a 55, and Audrianna Delacour scored a 59 for Punxsy's third-best.
"We can always count on a good score from Lauren," Irwin said. "She performs consistently well in each match."
Marisa Stockdale and Caroline Dunkel tied for the final official score with a 62, bringing Punxsy's total to 228 — 28 shots better than next-best DuBois.
Lauren McGee (68) also played for Punxsy.
Brookville scored a 267 as a team, led by Kacey Osborne (58) and Kirsten Gordon (59).
The tournament's low- scorer was Ridgway's Selena Scarna — an impressive 49, given the course conditions
Irwin is pleased with the way her girls have been playing but still sees room for them to continually improve, as well.
"Now that our season is in full swing, I look for the scores to decrease," she said. "It's been a rainy few weeks, but the frequent matches will keep the girls practicing and drive down their scores."
Irwin also pointed out that her team was able to persevere through difficult conditions to earn four in the win column.
"To walk away with four wins on a day like today is just incredible," she said. "The conditions were less than ideal. The course was still a little rough after all the bad weather lately, and the pin placements were incredibly difficult from a tournament over the weekend."
Punxsy hopes to keep rolling this afternoon when it travels to Brookville for a head-to-head match.View more articles in:
