PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' basketball team was unable to crack 30 points before missing out on the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic Championship Game for the third-straight season during a 41-29 loss to Westmont Hilltop Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago scored 18 points, but she didn't receive much help, as the rest of the Lady Chucks' roster combined for 11 points.
Junior Alex Magill added seven points, and Parris Kernich tallied two.
Senior Jenna Reitz, who scored a combined 38 points during Punxsy's last two games — both wins — was held to just two points. Reitz scored her team's only third-quarter points, as the Lady Chucks' 21-19 halftime advantage turned into a 30-23 lead for the Lady Hilltoppers entering the fourth quarter.
Westmont (5-1) was paced by the only senior on its roster — Alyssa Yewcic, who scored 15 points. Her 10-point first quarter helped Westmont jet out to a 17-10 lead entering the second frame.
Junior guard Gina Rievel added 14 points. She was consistent all game, scoring during every quarter.
Punxsy, which fell to 2-5 on the season and saw its two-game winning streak come to an end, will compete in the tournament's consolation game at 1:15 p.m. today against Hazleton. Hazleton fell to Marion Center, 61-47, during Wednesday's first game.
Marion Center faces Westmont Hilltop at 6 p.m. in the championship game.
Punxsy scored four of the game's first five points, but a 16-6 run helped Westmont take a 17-10 lead into the second quarter.
Westmont's offense vanished in the second quarter, as after Rievel scored seven seconds into the quarter, Punxsy didn't allow another point until the third quarter.
Punxsy closed the first half on an 11-0 run behind five points by Magill, four points by Crago and a Kernich basket.
The script flipped in the third quarter, as Punxsy was outscored 11-2, just as it had outscored Westmont during the second quarter.
Westmont was ahead 26-21 when Reitz's two-pointer with 2:14 left in the third frame ended Punxsy's dry spell, but four more points by the Lady Hilltoppers made it a 30-23 contest entering the fourth.
Punxsy completed an eight-point second half, as Crago scored all six of Punxsy's fourth-quarter points.
After Rievel scored the first basket of the final quarter, Punxsy was never able to get any closer than nine points.
Marion Center 61, Hazleton 47
