STATE COLLEGE — With 17 of the game's 20 players being upperclassmen, experience was endless between the Punxsutawney and State College softball teams Thursday in State College.

State College, however, was the team that provided the clutch hits late in the game during a 6-2 victory over the Lady Chucks, whose undefeated season came to an end.

Punxsy (7-1) scored single runs during the fourth and six innings, but the lack of big hits led to its first loss of the season.

Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said that his team seemed flat, didn't hit the ball well and hardly hit the ball hard.

Punxsy starting pitcher Shawnna Crago, who struggled to hit her spots, took the loss, throwing 4 1/3-innings and allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Randa Depp pitched the final 1 2/3-innings and gave up three runs on one hit with three walks (two intentional) and a hit batter.

Punxsy never led, as State College was ahead 2-0 through three innings. With a 3-2 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Lions earned three insurance runs to leap ahead 6-2.

With the bases loaded and two outs, State College's Erica Nolan ripped a three-run double that scored Alicia Baney, Megan Robert and Dani Hart.

Haley Shaw pitched a complete game for State College. She surrendered two runs on five hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Jenna Reitz drove in both of Punxsy's runs, which were both scored by Crago.

During the fourth inning, Crago drew a walk, stole second and third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reitz.

A one-out bloop double by Crago led to Reitz's RBI single in the sixth inning for Punxsy's final run.

Hannah Neal, Megan Muth and Allie Shields also singled for Punxsy.

Hart was 1-for-1 with three runs, Nolan drove in four base runners, and Emilee Eden was 2-for-2 with a triple, a run and an RBI for State College.

Punxsy had nine seniors play Saturday, and State College had eight.

The Lady Chucks will have an opportunity to begin another winning streak when they host Clearfield at 4:15 p.m.

Punxsy will then head to DuBois for a noon start Saturday. The Punxsy-DuBois game was originially scheduled for Monday, but due to the possibility of rain, the schools agreed to move the contest up to Saturday.
