PUNXSUTAWNEY — A local car dealer is holding a fundraiser Saturday in order to raise money for the Punxsutawney Fire Department.
Geoffrey Brackman, general manager of Kuntz Chevrolet Buick in Punxsutawney, said he's had an idea for a while to hold a special benefit for the fire department.
"Bill Williams, a Punxsutawney volunteer firefighter who works with me here at Kuntz's, would always tell me about the various needs that the fire department has," Brackman said, adding that one day, while traveling to work, he came up with an idea to put on an annual benefit for the fire department.
"I didn't know what it was going to look like or how it was going to shake out," he said.
"I just thought with all the space I have over here, and with not much happening on the East End of town, I thought I could do something that would benefit the fire department and also benefit the community at the same time," Brackman said.
He said Williams proposed the idea to the other members of the fire department and, eventually, they had a meeting with all three of the fire companies.
"We sat down; we talked; and we worked through some ideas," he said.
"The whole purpose of this event — regardless of what type of entertainment that we have — our goal is to raise $1,000 for each fire company, Central, Elk Run and Lindsey," Brackman said.
"So we are trying to raise $3,000 total through direct donations from businesses, and the community can give on the day of the event," he said.
Brackman said Kuntz's will have buckets located throughout the area for people to donate, with the proceeds going to the Punxsutawney Fire Department.
"We're asking that people come out with their pocket change, dollar bills and checks made out to the fire company," Brackman said, adding that the second way people can give back to the fire company is by purchasing hot dogs and hamburgers.
Kuntz Motors will provide all of the food, with the proceeds to go toward the fire company, he said. The cost is two hot dogs for $1, a hamburger for $1 and pop and water for 50 cents, he said. The food will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Kuntz's.
"We want the price to be low enough that families can come out and have a good time," Brackman said.
The fire department will be bringing some of its apparatus, which will be on display in the used car lot, he said.
Brackman said Kuntz's will have some special activities during the event:
• 11 a.m. — A presentation on what drivers should do when they are involved in an accident; and how to change a tire.
• 1 p.m. — Free trade-in evaluations. Drivers should park their vehicles along Elk Street if they want Kuntz Motors to evaluate it.
"I need the community to come out and help us, so we can make this an annual event," Brackman said.
The fundraiser is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kuntz Motors on East Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney.
