Kenneth K. Cielo, 78

November 4, 2013

Kenneth K. Cielo, 78, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at Hospice of the Valley in Mesa, after a long and courageous battle with COPD.

Mr. Cielo was born on May 1, 1935, in Vandergrift, Pa., the son of the late Hazel M. Cielo and Kelly R. Cielo.

Ken attended Brookville and Punxsutawney high schools.

He joined the Navy after graduation and served four years as lead trumpet player for the Navy band.

Ken worked at the family-owned car sales business, Kelly Cielo Ford, during the ‘60s and ‘70s, along with playing with various musical groups.

He was a member of the SS.C.D. church and directed the choir for a time.

He moved to California and then back to Punxsutawney, where he owned a graphic design business, 36 Uptown.

For health reasons, he moved to Arizona in 2003 after being diagnosed with COPD.

Ken was probably most recognized for his ability to play two trumpets at once.

He had a love for music and continued playing his trumpets (even while he was on oxygen) until shortly before his death.

He is survived by his wife, Karolyn K. Cielo of Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Nancy Cielo Gotwald and husband Carl of Oliveburg, Pa.; one son, Kevin K. Cielo and wife Diane R. Cielo of Punxsutawney; two daughters, Kelly Ann Cielo of Falls Creek and Amber L. Cielo of Fresno, Calif.; six grandchildren, Julie M. Cielo, Kayla M. Cielo, Kacey L. Cielo, Jamie R. Cielo, Randal D. Shumaker and Rachel R. Shumaker; two great-grandchildren, Adriana M. Means and Angelo J. Sanchez; and one nephew, Ron Cielo of Punxsutawney.

Ken decided to donate his body to science so his illness could be studied and the research could help others.
