PUNXSUTAWNEY — With Groundhog Day just around the corner, Punxsutawney Phil's Souvenir Shop is offering some new and exciting items.

Punxsy Phil fans can check out either the souvenir shop or the online shop at GroundhogStuff.com, which offers the same souvenirs but at a convenience for those unable to travel. The online store has been operating since 2000.

"Every year, we try to get new items in," said Marlene Lellock, executive director of the Punxsutawney Chamber of Commerce. Companies, such as Standard Pennant in Big Run and Eagle Ad Specialties of Punxsutawney design and send Groundhog Day t-shirts to the store.

The chamber also deals with local vendors — one being The Gingerbread Angel, owned and operated by Deb Fleckenstein.

People from all over the world order from the online shop, and just recently, a large order came in from Dublin, Ireland.

Lellock said that there are "groundhog groupies," who are big-time buyers of Punxsy Phil souvenirs. Members of the Groundhog Club are big buyers as well.

At the shop, one can find a variety of different items, such as keychains, Punxsy Phil puppets, hats, t-shirts, mugs and much more.

The most popular item, aside from the Punxsy Phil Mardi Gras beads, which sell like crazy, is a new item called "Punxsutawney Phil in a Can."

This interesting new item is a can that has a pop tab, which, once opened, allows a plush Phil to pop up.

Each “Phil in a Can” has a little sign that will say either "6 more weeks of winter" or "6 weeks until spring."

Kids can take the stuffed animal out of the can or put him back in and have him pop up again.

On the side of the can is the legend of Punxsy Phil, which gives a detailed history lesson of how he and it came to be.

Two other best-selling items include "Gobbler’s Knob Hot Chocolate Mix" and "Groundhog Poop" — don't worry. it's just a variety of candy.

On display at the shop are a few other items for kids of all ages, including a limited-edition Punxsutawney Phil mobile Matchbox bus; a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle of Gobbler's Knob; a Happy Groundhog Day pin; a Groundhog Day baby gift set that includes a bib, blanket and hat; an embroidered groundhog golf shirt; a Gobbler's Knob wine caddy; and Gobbler's Knob wine glasses and wine stoppers.

Another neat item this year is a new Groundhog Day mug called the "Amazink Shadow Mug."

It features Punxsy Phil and his shadow, and when you put a hot beverage inside, the shadow disappears.

With the beloved Punxsutawney holiday fast approaching, all of these items can be purchased either online or at the souvenir shop located at 102 West Mahoning Street.

If one would like to contact the shop, he or she may do so by calling 814-938-7700.
