Junior Varsity Chucks rally for season-ending victory over Bison
CLEARFIELD — In an unusual scenario to end the season, the Punxsy junior varsity baseball squad found itself in a considerable deficit Friday.
Trailing 7-3, the JV Chucks showcased the stellar offense they have shown all season for what would be a game-deciding five-run sixth inning, before holding the Bison scoreless in the final two frames for an 8-7 season finale victory.
“What a great game; back-and-forth lead changes,” pointed out Punxsy JV head coach Rodney Thompson.
Brandon Blose showed his growth by battling out the complete game victory to help Punxsy end its campaign with an outstanding 14-5 mark.
“Brandon Blose pitched a complete game tonight and battled every inning against a good-hitting Bison team. Brandon has come a long way this year, hitting spots, developing a good deuce, and most of all, maturing on the mound by gaining his composure when calls and plays do not go his way,” said Thompson. “He wanted the ball today and he was determined to finish this game out."
Blose finished with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
While Blose toughed out the frames on the mound, Punxsy needed its offense to come through late.
Despite being outhit 15-10 by Clearfield, Punxsy had the big output when it needed it.
Ben Snyder paced the JV Chucks with a double and single.
Ethan Ambler added a pair of singles, while Dylan Bender laced a double and came home with the winning run.
Peyton Graham, Jacob Tyger, Blose, Ryan Jones and Ty Wasicki completed the team’s hits with one each.
“These guys battled today and never gave up,” stressed the Punxsy coach. “We ran the base paths very well and capitalized on every 90 feet we could take. Coach (Jeremy) Hospodar and I emphasized all year how important that 90 feet can be in a close game, and today it paid off.”
Thompson concluded, “We started six freshmen and three sophomores most of the season and got the job done today and all year long. It was a great team effort and a really fun way to end the regular season. Coach Hoss and I want to congratulate the players on a great season and want to thank the parents for their support all season. This is a good bunch of kids, and it was a pleasure to coach them this year.”
