John R. "Dick" Phillips Sr., 84

John R. "Dick" Phillips Sr., 84, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at UPMC-Shadyside, Pittsburgh.

He was born Feb. 12, 1927, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Nicholas and Elizabeth (Williams) Phillips.

Aug. 22, 1953, he married Irene (Gresock) Phillips of Punxsutawney, who survives.

Mr. Phillips served with honor in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars with the 24th Infantry Division, C-Battery, 13th FA BN and 101st Airborne Div., C-Battery, 319 FA BN. He retired from the Army in 1978, having been stationed in Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey and Texas, as well as Hanau and Berlin, Germany. He later worked at Rolla-Jensen and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

He was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years and a volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Mr. Phillips was an avid baseball and PAHS sports fan and volunteered at the Teener League fields.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include four sons, John Richard Phillips Jr. and wife Maryanne of Punxsutawney, Mark Joseph Phillips and wife Amy of Mechanicsburg, Patrick Michael Phillips of Punxsutawney, and Andrew Paul Phillips and wife Christine of Bethel Park; two daughters, Laura Jesse and husband John of Punxsutawney, and Colleen McKenzie and husband Regis III of Peters Township; a brother, William Phillips and wife Joan of Punxsutawney; 13 grandchildren, Roderic Phillips, Derek Phillips, John Jesse III, Jacob Jesse and wife Sarah, Jordan Jesse, Randon Phillips, Riley Phillips, Mitchell Phillips, Regis John McKenzie IV, Emily McKenzie, Matthew McKenzie, Abigail Phillips and Caroline Phillips; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Lorraine, Nicholas, Francis, Joseph, Paul and Raymond Phillips; three sisters, Grace Cooper, Mary DeChurch and Anna Rita Davis; and a grandson, Eric Matthew Phillips.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at the McCabe Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Joseph Riccardo officiating.

Interment will follow at Adrian-Anita Catholic Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Jefferson County Veterans' Honor Guard.
