John A. Pape Sr., 93

John A. (Bid) Pape Sr., 93, of Punxsutawney, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at St. Andrews Village in Indiana.

He was born April 5, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Carmen and Concetta (Nace) Pape.

Feb. 3, 1940, he married Carolyn (Brown) Pape, who preceded him in death April 9, 1991.

Mr. Pape was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.

He was an avid boxer and baseball player in his youth and went on to play professional baseball as a catcher with the Detroit Tigers in 1941.

Mr. Pape was well known as an International Beagle Judge and also judged for the DuBois Beagle Club. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and he tied his own flies and streamers.

Surviving relatives include two sons, John A. Pape Jr. and wife Elizabeth Ann of Anita, and Joseph L. Pape and wife Rosy of Punxsutawney; a daughter, Suzanne Meneely and husband Leonard of Sagamore; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Darlene K. Pape and Carol Ann Pape; a son, USAF 1st Class Robert P. Pape in 1970 in Vietnam; three brothers, Louis Pape, Michael Pape and Angelo Pape; and three sisters, Sarah Defelice, Rose Constantino and Christina Palmer.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Joseph Riccardo as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Pape’s name may be made to SS.C.D. or the charity of the donor’s choice.
