John Groves Maine, 77

April 27, 2014

John Groves Maine, 77, of Rochester Mills, died Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Nov. 16, 1936, in DuBois, the son of the late attorney Robert Vincent and Emma (Groves) Maine.

On Oct. 21, 1967, he married the former Virginia "Ginger" Louise Mottorn. She survives.

John attended Mercersburg Academy and was a graduate of Cornell University.

He worked for Rockwell International in DuBois and later transferred to Houston, Texas, with the company.

He then became a realtor and sold real estate in Houston for about four years.

In 1981, he and his wife, Ginger, moved to her family farm in Rochester Mills.

Together, through their love of fiber animals such as sheep, Angora goats, rabbits, alpacas and llamas, and John's love of farming, they began Silverbrooke Fiber Arts; the business continues its operations.

One of John's great virtues was his gift of being an influence in the lives of many children and adults by sharing his passion, through his heritage tour, by explaining the history of the barn built in 1806, the colonial cabin and the schoolhouse at Silverbrooke.

Many may recall visiting Silverbrooke Farm from 1982-1997 for the free drive-through Christmas celebration of lights and decorations, which John dedicated many hours preparing for in order to share with others.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He was also a member of the Gateway Squares; he and his wife enjoyed round dancing and the modern square dance, and also truly enjoyed the many people they have met through the dances.

He was also a board member of RSVP.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Robert (Michelle) Maine of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Jennifer (David Sizemore) Sizemore Maine of Pittsburgh; daughter-in-law Louise Maine of Punxsutawney; three grandchildren, Rebecca and Ryan Maine of Punxsutawney, and Jacob Sizemore of Pittsburgh; one sister, E. Jane (Jim) Mueller; niece Patty (Tim) Napp; and nephew Robert (Mindy) Mueller, all of Houston, Texas.

Please note the following change in funeral arrangements: a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney, officiated by Pastor Paul Ritchey.

A private interment will be at Morningside Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Maine's memory to the Punxsutawney Area Hospital or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
