John G. McGonagle, 88

John G. McGonagle, 88, Harborcreek, passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Shippenville.

He was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Edward and Laura Mann McGonagle.

He married Mary McGonagle, who survives, his wife of 52 years.
Mr. McGonagle had resided in Erie since 1949.

He was an active member of South Harborcreek United Methodist Church.
He was also a past master of Tyrian Commonwealth Lodge No. 362 F&AM and Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Erie.

Mr. McGonagle was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and was at Normandy on D-Day with the 743rd Tank Battalion. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart.

He enjoyed golfing and bowling.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a son, Jeffrey McGonagle and wife Michele of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Mary Beth Allen and husband Keith of Shippenville; a brother, Lester L. McGonagle of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Alice Allenbaugh and Nancy Hauck, both of Punxsutawney; five grandchildren, Matthew and Jenna McGonagle and Nicole, Tyler and Brooke Allen; a great-grandson, Joel McGonagle; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Patrick McGonagle.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at the Dusckas Funeral Home Inc., East, Erie, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the South Harborcreek United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the church with Pastor Keith McGarvey officiating.

A full military service will follow at South Harborcreek Cemetery, conducted by the American Legion Carl Neff Post No. 571.

Tyrian Commonwealth Lodge No. 362 will hold a service at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in Mr. McGonagle's name may be made to the South Harborcreek United Methodist Church Building Fund, 7929 McGill Rd., Harborcreek, Pa. 16421.
