John Donald Filipovich Sr., 80

John Donald Filipovich Sr., 80, of Creekside, died Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Known to everyone as "Don," he was born Feb. 2, 1931, in Adrian, the son of William J. and Pauline (Kutoloski) Filipovich Sr.

Mr. Filipovich and his family relocated to Indiana in 1941, and at the age of 10, he began delivering newspapers.

He attended the St. Bernard Catholic School until eighth grade and then attended Indiana High School, graduating in 1949. While in high school, Mr. Filipovich played baseball and football. Following graduation, he then played semi-pro football for the Indiana Tomahawks.

Mr. Filipovich's first full-time job was at Waxlers Department store in Indiana, where he met his future wife, Jean. In 1952, he was employed for the J.S. Raub store, where he eventually became the district manager in charge of 19 stores throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.

June 25, 1955, at the St. Bernard Church, he married his sweetheart, Jean Allshouse, who survives, of Creekside, where they resided for the next 56 years.

During his life, Mr. Filipovich became a member of the Ernest Assumption Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He participated in Marion Center Little League at the Creekside fields with his four sons. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman who loved watching the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include four sons, John Donald Jr. and wife Kathy, Robert Lee and wife Janis, Joseph Allen and wife Jennifer, and Michael Edward and wife Rebecca; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Maruk; a brother, Joseph Filipovich and wife Janice; a sister-in-law, Nell Filipovich; a brother-in-law, Arthur Allshouse; a sister-in-law, Anna Marie Allshouse; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Joseph Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Michael Maruk.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at the Ernest Assumption Church with Fr. Tim Kruthaupt as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the St. Bernard Church Cemetery.
