John Alvah Hoy, 90

John Alvah Hoy, 90, Ludlow, Mass., formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2011.

Known as "Al" to friends and family, he was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Chloride, Ariz., to the late Charles C. and Gertrude (Ware) Hoy.

Jan. 24, 1946, in Punxsutawney, he married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Louise (Hoffman) Hoy, who preceded him in death.

He graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1938 and attended two years of business school.

Mr. Hoy served in the U.S. Army in the 2nd Armored Division on General Patton's command from 1942-1945, when he was honorably discharged.

While serving, he was stationed in Sicily,Normandy, northern France, central Europe, Ardennes and Rhineland.

He received the World War II Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars.

Mr. Hoy was the oldest living member of the Punxsutawney Lodge of Elks; a Master Mason and life member with the Henry Knox Field Lodge of Masons in Alexandria, Va.; and a longtime employee for Hamilton Cosco of Columbus, Ind.

In his free time, Mr. Hoy could be found on the golf course or playing Bridge with friends.

Surviving relatives include three loving children, William Hoy and wife Flossie of Raleigh, N.C., Nancy Barszcz and husband David of Belchertown, Mass., and Richard Hoy and wife Barbara of La Plata, Md; seven grandchildren, Chris, Jen, Katie, Beth, Carleigh, Heather and Ali; and five great-grandchildren, Jack, Jane, Sonora, Holden and Ellie.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Alexander Hoy.

He will be deeply missed by his sister-ln-law, Betty Hoffman Philliber, and her son, Butch, of Punxsutawney.

Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at the funeral home with Pastor Brett Swanson officiating.

Interment will be at Circle Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mr. Hoy's name to Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
