Jefferson County Jail currently not interested in picking up state inmates and related programs

BROOKVILLE — Due to continued population issues, the Jefferson County Jail is presently uninterested in programs involving the housing of state inmates, Warden Tom Elbel said at its most recent meeting last Monday.

The matter was raised when District Attorney Jeff Burkett brought up an email that had been sent to members of the board
by County Commission Chairman Paul Corbin, who also sits on the Jail Inspection/Intermediate Punishment Board but was not present for that particular meeting.

The contents of the email addressed matters concerning the housing of state inmates, a related training program and other connected elements.
Elbel said he had received it, but that was all he had done with it in terms of acting on it.

“I actually haven’t done anything with that,” he said, “because our building’s full. I’m not interested in state inmates right now.”
