James Richard Pifer, 90

James Richard Pifer, 90, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Merle Philip and Ida Elizabeth (Smith) Pifer. 

He is the last member of his family.

Mr. Pifer was a corporal with the U.S. Army Air Force, having served during World War II. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the American Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Nov. 15, 1946, he married Doris Ruth Bair, who survives.

Mr. Pifer worked as a truck driver for Dealers Transit, Quaker State, and retired from D.G. Mock Oil Company.

He enjoyed his family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He liked working on cars, watching old movies and visiting with family and friends. He sold used cars from his car lot in Harmony for many years.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include five daughters, Vicki Lowmaster and husband Ben of Punxsutawney, Sandy Learn and husband Marc of Penn Yan, N.Y., Pam Kramer and husband Ron of Punxsutawney, Kim Painter and husband Harry of Punxsutawney, and Marlene Shotts and husband Donald of Dayton; 12 grandchildren, Janet Burkett, Mike and Brian Lowmaster, Shelly Burkett, Penny, Marcus and Jesse Learn, Jamie Holeva, Diana Harman, Harry James Painter, and Jim and Ryan Shotts; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Isabel Kellet and Olive Sloniger.

At Mr. Pifer’s request, there will be no visitation. 

Arrangements are under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney.

Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill EUB Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Pifer’s memory to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 163549, Columbus, Ohio 43216-3549, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
