James R. "J.R." McConnaughey, 79

James R. "J.R." McConnaughey, 79, Rossiter, formerly of Buffalo, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, Sept, 28, 2011, at his home.

Mr. McConnaughey was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Buffalo, a son of the late Clinton and Isabella (Findley) McConnaughey.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (McGee) McConnaughey, whom he married May 1, 1954.

A U.S. Navy veteran who earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Mr. McConnaughey was a member of the Rossiter American Legion, a member and pistol instructor for the NRA and a hunter safety instructor.  

He was employed by Rola-Jensen of Punxsutawney and Great Lakes Pressed Steel of Buffalo.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a daughter, Diana Carlson and husband Ken of Rossiter; two grandchildren, Kenneth J. Carlson and friend Heather Blake of Indiana, and Juli Carlson Smith and husband Shawn of Indiana; two brothers, Tom McConnaughey of Buffalo, and Chuck McConnaughey and wife Linda of Kentucky; two sisters, Larue (Kitty) Thom and husband Phil of Punxsutawney, and Dorothy LeCompte of Punxsutawney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clinton (King) McConnaughey and Bill McConnaughey.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the McCabe Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

 A funeral service will held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. 

Interment will follow at Pine Cemetery, Locust, where a veteran's service will be conducted by the Rossiter American Legion.

 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
