James Edward Gearhart, 87

James Edward Gearhart, 87, of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Christ the King Manor.

He was born April 13, 1926, in Luthersburg, a son of the late Samuel and Mary (Alsbaugh) Gearhart.

Mr. Gearhart was a United States Army veteran, having served during World War II.

He previously worked in assembly for General Motors, drove piggyback trucks and drove horses across the U.S.

He enjoyed bowling, going tobogganing and being with his family.

He is survived by three children, Carol A. Osmon of Tonawanda, N.Y., Mary Kathryn Baker and husband David of Lockport, N.Y., and Robin Conlan and husband Terry of Lockport, N.Y.; loving companion Verna Schlee; 12 grandchildren, James R. Osmon Jr. and wife Melissa, Gina L. Mellott and husband Timothy, Carrie Brown and husband Doug, Brandi Wilczak and husband John, Brian Baker and wife Lisa, Terry Conlan Jr. and wife Carla, Amber Fitzgerald and husband James, Adam Conlan and wife Lisa, Jeremy Conlan and partner Scott, Katie Conlan and husband Kelly, Roger Winters Jr. and wife Trudy, and Janelle Santiago and husband Leo; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother John Gearhart; daughter Diane Gearhart; grandson Craig Winters; brother Leslie Rishell; two sisters, Annie Hoover and Florence Lauver; and son-in-law James Ray Osmon, Sr.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor David Nagle.

Interment will follow at Troutville Union Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the DuBois Area Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Gearhart's memory to Hahne Cancer Center or DRMC Hospice.
