James D. Hartzfeld, 72

James D. Hartzfeld, 72, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at UPMC-Presbyterian as the result of injuries sustained in a farming accident Monday.

He was born Nov. 11, 1938, in Luthersburg, a son of the late Eugene and Arvilla (Swartzlander) Hartzfeld.

Aug. 17, 1973, he married Kathleen L. (Bonsall) Hartzfeld, who survives.

Mr. Hartzfeld was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and a retired coal miner of 35 years. He enjoyed many years of taking care of the Bonsall Family Farm.

He was a member to the Troutville Trinity United Church of Christ, where he served as an elder and as the church cemetery caretaker. He was a charter member of the Brady Township Fire Department and was a former Henderson Township supervisor and auditor.

Mr. Hartzfeld was a member of the Brady Grange No. 1218, the Past to Present Machinery Association, the Over-50 Club of Luthersburg, and a Jefferson County Fair Board member. He enjoyed days filled socializing with many friends and family.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include two daughters, Sharon Smochek and husband Richard of Punxsutawney, and Karen Orner and husband Frank of Rockton; three sons, Randy Hartzfeld and wife Vicki of Punxsutawney, David Hartzfeld and wife Kelly of DuBois, and Daniel Hartzfeld and wife Renee of Warren; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Price of DuBois, Mary Gilbert and husband Charles of Amherst, N.Y., and Rebecca Spencer and husband Alan of Luthersburg; and three brothers, Howard Hartzfeld and wife Mary Alice of Erie, Glenn Hartzfeld and wife Sandy of Luthersburg, and Llyn Hartzfeld and wife Donna of Luthersburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Viola Miknis, Roberta Berger, and infant Helen Marie Hartzfeld; and two brothers, Robert Hartzfeld and infant George Hartzfeld.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at the the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home, DuBois.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the Troutville Trinity United Church of Christ with Pastor Mary Ellen Hoffman officiating.

Burial will follow in the Troutville Trinity United Church of Christ Cemetery.
