James “Jim” Howard Elkin, 76

James “Jim” Howard Elkin, 76, Shelocta, (Plumcreek Township), died Monday, May 16, 2011, at home with his loving family and friends.

He was born July 23, 1934, on a farm close to Smicksburg, the son of the late James Elmer and Ruth (Alcorn) Elkin.

He was married to Mary C. (Thomey) Elkin, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Elkin was a retired staff sergeant with the U.S. Air Force and a member and past commander of VFW Post 6555 in Sagamore.

He was a member of the Keystone Sportsman Club in Atwood, and he enjoyed the outdoors and traveled around the world while serving his country and enjoyed hunting and fishing when able.

He was a great sports fan of the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins, but local softball was his greatest pastime: Delpra’s, Silver Dollar and Tailgaters.

Surviving relatives include his children, Linda Saxfield and husband Jerry of Plumville, and Jay Elkin and wife Pat of Shelocta; grandchildren, Chad, Staci and Chubby, Jerry and Kristy, Ryan and Alicia Saxfield, Shawnee and Nick Armstrong, Jason and Kelly and Justin and Kristin Elkin, Erin and J.R. Lipsie and Johnny and Melissa Gbur; nieces, Kay Brink and Linda Bradford and their families; and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Borrows; and a brother, Blaine Elkin.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the Carson/Boyer Funeral Home Inc., 724 Main St. Rural Valley.

A Blessing Service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the funeral home with Fr. Daniel Blout officiating.

Interment will be in the North Point Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Three Rivers Hospice Patient Care Fund, 1195 Jacks Run Rd., North Versailles, Pa. 15137.
