Irene Elizabeth Meterko, 84

Irene Elizabeth Meterko, 84, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Sept. 4, 1927, at home in Bell Township, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Melechik) Carol. She lived her entire life on the family property where she was born.

June 25, 1949, she married William Henry Meterko, who survives.

Her husband said that she was the greatest woman that he has ever known.

They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this year.

Mrs. Meterko was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Church, and she enjoyed being involved in church activities. She also enjoyed baking.

In addition to her husband, surviving relatives include a special niece, Karen Davis and husband Kevin of Punxsutawney, and numerous other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Carol and Helen Mitcho; and two brothers, George and John Carol.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney.

A Parastas service will be held at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Church.

Interment will follow at Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Cemetery.
