DUBOIS — It is always tough to face a team that is red hot.
This was the challenge the Punxsy softball squad had on its plate on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Chucks were able to take an early one-run lead before the hot-playing Lady Beavers answered with three runs and never trailed again for a 6-3 victory in DuBois.
The victory was DuBois (10-4) ninth in a row.
The Lady Beavers last defeat came at the hands of the Lady Chucks (11-4) on April 17 by a 1-0 final.
"We left way too many on base today. We couldn't string hits together as our hitters were not totally in sync," explained Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer.
Pitcher Monica Cameron helped her own cause by producing two of her team's six hits and scoring one of the runs of the affair.
Sydney Phillips drove in a run with a single.
Savannah Hallman singled and scored, while Ashley Walls and Mary Sloniger added the other two hits.
Ashley Bacha and Ivy Phillips drew RBI bases loaded walks.
"We drew the most walks (as a team of eight) that we have in the last few years," pointed out Pifer. "We just didn't capitalize on them with key hits."
Cameron scattered nine hits without walking a DuBois hitter, while fanning three.
"Monica pitched well enough to win and deserved a better fate than what she received, as DuBois' three runs in the first were unearned," noted the Punxsy coach.
The contest started out alright for Punxsy.
With one out, Bacha walked and moved to second on an Ivy Phillips sac bunt. Walls drew a free pass before Sydney Phillips singled to score Bacha for a 1-0 early lead in the top of the first frame.
DuBois came right back with its trio of unearned runs in the home first to overtake Punxsy by a 3-1 margin.
The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Beavers were able to add a pair of tallies in the home fifth to increase the difference to 5-1.
In the top of the sixth, Punxsy was able to scratch back.
Emily Horner and Hallman drew walks. With one out, Cameron reached on an error to load the bases.
Chelsea Engeholm lined into a fielder's choice where Horner was thrown out at home, which kept runners at every base. Bacha and Ivy Phillips followed with back-to-back run-scoring walks to cut the deficit to 5-3.
DuBois came back with a single tally in the home sixth and was able to keep Punxsy off the board in the seventh for the 6-3 final.
In the junior varsity contest, Punxsy was able to fend off DuBois in a high-scoring 11-9 contest.
The two JV rivals were seeing which team could outdo the other one.
Punxsy opened with one run in the top of the first.
DuBois bettered the output with two of its own in the home first.
After a scoreless second, the JV Lady Chucks pushed home five runs to lead 6-2. The Lady Beavers came back with three tallies for a one-run game, 6-5, with three frames completed.
Punxsy scored four times in the fourth, before DuBois equaled the number in the bottom of the same frame.
The JV Lady Chucks, though, posted what would be an insurance single run in the top of the fifth to make it 11-9.
The final two and a half innings did not see another player touch home plate.
"We hit the ball well today and did a great job on the base paths," pointed out Punxsy JV head coach Ken Covatch.
The three Punxsy top hitters were Nicole DiPietro, Jensen Constantino and Alyssa Reitz.
The JV trio combined for seven of the team's 11 hits and scored six times.
"Jensen and Nicole hit the ball really well today. Alyssa also came through with a couple of clutch hits with runners on," added Covatch.
DiPietro's two hits were both of the extra-base variety with a home run and double along with scoring three times.
Constantino doubled and singled two times with one run. Reitz laced a pair of singles.
Shaina Painter, Kara St. Clair, Amber Ward and Beth Barnett rounded out the hitting with a single each. Ward touched home plate two times and Shania DeFoor once.
DiPietro picked up the pitching win where she struck out five DuBois batters.
"Nicole did a good job pitching after a rough couple of innings to start the game," said the Punxsy JV coach.
The Punxsy softball teams will have today off before hosting Elk County Catholic in 4:15 p.m. games on Friday afternoon.View more articles in:
